He uses visual storytelling to create artistic, documentary, and environmental work for a wide range of clients and organisations, as well as his own projects. A jump cut is a transition between scenes in a film that involves breaking a single shot with a quick cut, jumping between scenes. The idea for Jump Cut arose out of a desire to formalise mentoring Colin has provided with Upland previously. Jump cut has been conceived to help address the shortage of initiatives for young, emerging artists to develop film and digital moving image work. The Jump Cut group edited the short film below where Sian shares her thinking behind the work: Sian created a site specific installation titled, 'Felt Not Telt'. The group also worked on the film below, which captures the practice of Sian Yeshe - a young artist based in Langholm who at the time was taking part in our Emerge mentoing programme. The film was screened as part of the 2021 DMC event at the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries. The project culminated in the production of a short film entitled 'The Plaza: A Documentary' which captured behind the scenes footage as DMC prepared for their Plaza gigs. The first Jump Cut project ran between late April – August 2021 during which time, 4 young people worked with Colin over 16 days. The first of these short films can be seen below, in which artist Bea Last talks about her installation at Gracefield Arts Centre titled The Red Bags. Both films will be shared and used by Upland to promote both the project, and the work of the organisations. The group worked with Colin to create two short films – one focussed on an Upland member artist or maker, and another focussed on a DMC artist. During this time, Colin acted as a film making ‘mentor’, sharing his skills and knowledge with the group and supporting them throughout the process. The 2022 project took place as an intensive short course, spanning 12 days (21 st June – 2 nd July). Questions may be referred to the Title IX Coordinator, Office of Investigations and Civil Rights. Jump Cut is an intensive course for young people (18-30 years) from Dumfries & Galloway to work alongside established filmmaker, photographer, and visual artist Colin Tennant, to create short documentary and artistic films inspired by the diverse cultural programme of Upland and DMC (Dumfries Music Collective).
